Details about the movie on IMDb

This movie has really amazing atmosphere with the clothes, jewels, music, spoken language, it is full of colors and just audiovisual heaven. Also, all the actors were performing like they really belonged to that era, I just loved it.

The movie is based on the novel The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and is happening during summer in 1922 on Long Island in New York. The narrator is a wall street trader and wannabe writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who moves to a little house next to the palace of a mysterious party-giving millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Gradually he is drawn into the world of vanity, lust, love, infidelity, deceits, desires, dreams and big money. Gatsby is in love with Nick’s cousin Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), who he met five years ago before he went to war and they had an affair together. Daisy lives just across the bay from him with her husband Tom (Joel Edgerton) and their daughter. When they meet again after all those years, Daisy promises to leave her husband and stay with Gatsby, however when they meet all together, she refuses to admit it and there is a passionate fight which leads to a car accident when Tom’s mistress Myrtle (Isla Fisher) is killed. However, everyone thinks it was Gatsby, who was driving, despite it was Daisy, and in the end Gatsby gets shot by Myrtle’s husband, just exactly at the time when Daisy calls him that she wants to be with him.

I read the book few years ago and even then I loved the story, but when I saw the movie, it was another level. I didn’t have such creative imagination as the director of the movie and it just blew my mind. Everything was set up in the 1920’s but mixed with modern music and everything had a modern touch, even the clothes and jewels but at the same time, the actors were speaking in the 1920’s way. Just perfect combination. I could write more and more superlatives about his movie but I would be just repeating myself. From my point of view, it was just amazing show from the beginning till the end.

I give the movie rating 9/10
